1st Grade Q2 Curriculum for Week 3, 10/21-10/25

Reading – We are learning about Nonfiction texts and this month we are reading many books by Gail Gibbons. Can your child find the main idea and facts in a nonfiction text?

Grammar – We are learning about plural nouns. Have your child identify plural nouns as they are reading a book. Example: The girl caught lots of flies. The boy played with many toys.

Writing – Students will continue to practice Informative Writing. Informative writing is when you want to teach someone facts about a topic. Sing the song.

Informative Writing has a title,

A topic sentence and lots of facts.

Don’t forget the conclusion,

Informative writing is full of facts.

Use some of the transitions before writing facts on a topic – Did you know, One fact is, According to the article/video, Surprisingly…

Math – We are starting a new chapter. Chapter 4 is about subtraction strategies. One strategy is counting backwards to find the answer. Use a number line to help. Practice counting backwards and forwards. A reminder that it does not always start at one.

Social Studies/Science – Students will be introduced and learn about spiders. Ask them to tell you four facts about spiders.

 

Requesting donations classroom projects:

A reminder that we will be painting medium sized pumpkins during the last week of October. The size of the pumpkin should be no taller than a water bottle. Please donate a pumpkin for your child by Friday, October 25th. Any donations of extra pumpkins is also very much appreciated. Thank you!

Q2 Curriculum for Week 2, 10/14-10/18

Reading – We are learning about Nonfiction texts and this month we are reading many books by Gail Gibbons. Can your child find the nonfiction text features: title, the table of contents, glossary and bold words?

Grammar – We are learning about adverbs. Have your child identify adverbs as they are reading a book. Example: The old man and woman ran slowly after the gingerbread man.

Writing – Students will be starting their own Informative Writing on the type of animal of their choice. Informative writing is when you want to teach someone facts about a topic. It has a title, topic sentence, 4 facts with details and a conclusion. Have your child sing the song.

Math – We will be taking the Chapter 3 test: Addition Strategies on Wednesday, October 16th. Students will be reviewing what they have learned and will be taking a practice test by Tuesday.

 

Social Studies/Science – Students are learning how to categorize and classify animals by looking at their external parts. An example is that birds have feathers. We are also learning to classify mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles.

 

Requesting donations classroom projects:

Thank you for those who donated nylon frisbees to incorporate in our P.E. rotations. The students have been excited about the new activity and are having a blast with them!

We are moving the fall engineering project up to next week. Any donations of the following items would be happily accepted by this Friday, October 18th: water bottle caps, tongue depressors, and rubber bands.

We will be painting medium sized pumpkins during the last week of October. Please donate a pumpkin for your child by Friday, October 25th.

Also, all classes are looking for any more donations of brightly colored paper and white cardstock as well. Any donations would be greatly appreciated! We appreciate all that you do!

Q2 Curriculum for Week 1, 10/08-10/11

Welcome back Timberwolves families! We are so excited to start the quarter and learn about what our little timberwolves have been up to during the break. Here is the curriculum and news for the week. 

Reading – Students will be introduced to books written by Gail Gibbons. Gibbons is known for writing non-fiction books. We will be using these books as a window for students to recognize facts and writing structure.

Grammar – We are learning about prepositions. Have your child identify prepositions as they are reading a book. Example: She put the cookies inside the oven.

Writing – Students will be introduced to informative writing – full of facts!

Math – We will continue to work on Chapter 3: Addition Strategies. One strategy to focus on is making a ten from Khan Academy.

Social Studies – Students will be learning about Unit 2 Geography.

Requesting donations for P.E. and classroom projects:

The first grade team would like to incorporate a new P.E. activity involving nylon frisbee for students to practice teamwork and hand eye coordination. We have a few to start the quarter, but are hoping to have more! These frisbees are soft and can be viewed through Amazon.

We will be doing a fall engineering project towards the end of the month involving pumpkins! We are in need of lots of rubber bands and tongue depressors. Please bring any donations to your classroom teacher by Friday, October 25th.

Reading – Students will continue learn and read books by Laura Numeroff.

Grammar – We are learning about plural nouns and pronouns. Have your child identify proper pronouns as they are reading a book. Example: She baked cookies.

Writing – Students will be taking a test on opinion. They will brainstorm their ideas on Wednesday and write their paper on Thursday.

Math – We will continue to work on Chapter 3: Addition Strategies. Some strategies are 1) Add in any order, 2) Count On, 3) Add Doubles, and 4) Doubles plus or minus 1.

VAPA – Art and Music on Thursday, September, 19th.

Reading – Students will continue learn and read books by Laura Numeroff.

Grammar – We are learning about proper nouns. Have your child identify proper nouns as they are reading a book. Example: My family and I will go to Legoland on Friday.

Writing – Students are writing about: What was the best part of the zoo field trip? Opinion writing needs to have good reasons linked with examples/details. Here are some transitions to practice stating and linking the reasons and examples/details:

Reason 2: I also think this because ________. Example 2: For example, ____________.

OTHER NOTES If possible, apply sunscreen before school. All first graders should meet in front their respective classrooms instead of the letters on the blacktop. Please make sure your child comes to school on time! We will promptly board the bus at 9:00 A.M.!

Birthday Book Club Announcement:

If your child’s birthday falls between July-October, be sure to check their backpacks for their invitation to join our Wolf Canyon Birthday Book Club so we can celebrate them at our end-of-quarter assembly! 1st Grade Curriculum for Week 6, 8/26-8/30

Reading – Students have started to meet with their teachers for Guided Groups. Some of the texts that we are reading are about “How to follow rules and laws”.

Grammar – We are learning about adjectives and adverbs. An adjectives are descriptive words that help describe a noun and pronouns. Have your child identify an adjective in their nightly reading. I saw a beautiful, red rose in the garden.

Writing – Students took their Narrative Writing test and are starting Opinion Writing about the most important school rule. Opinion Writing has a hook, opinion statement, 2 reasons which are linked to examples and a conclusion.

Math – Students will soon begin reviewing Chapter 2: Subtraction Concepts. The Chapter 2 test will be administer this Friday, August, 30th.

Science: The unit about the similarities and differences of nature will continue this week.

I CAN statement: I can explain how young plants and animals are alike, but not exactly like their parents.

 

Movie Night & Campout announcement:

Raffle for parent field trip volunteers: 

Field trip permission slips are due by Wednesday. Parent volunteers will be drawn from a raffle and will be notified on Friday.
