1st Grade Curriculum for Week 8, 9/9-9/13

Reading – Students will continue learn and read books by Laura Numeroff.

Grammar – We are learning about proper nouns. Have your child identify proper nouns as they are reading a book. Example: My family and I will go to Legoland on Friday.

Writing – Students are writing about: What was the best part of the zoo field trip? Opinion writing needs to have good reasons linked with examples/details. Here are some transitions to practice stating and linking the reasons and examples/details:

Reason 1: I believe this because __________. Example 1: For example, ____________.

Reason 2: I also think this because ________. Example 2: For example, ____________.

Math – We will continue to work on Chapter 3: Addition Strategies. Some strategies are 1) Add in any order, 2) Count On, 3) Add Doubles, and 4) Doubles plus or minus 1.

 

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Conferences will begin this Thursday, September 12th. Please make sure to arrive early so you may have some time to write a few academic goals for your child that you wish to discuss during the conference.

1st Grade Curriculum for Week 7, 9/3-9/6

Grammar – We are learning about singular and plural nouns. Have your child identify plural nouns as they are reading a book. Example: I saw two birds.

Writing – Students will continue to write their opinion pieces. Sing the Opinion Chant to remember all of the parts:

Don’t forget the conclusion!

Social Studies: Each class will begin a new unit about Where People Live.

Birthday Book Club Announcement:

If your child’s birthday falls between July-October, be sure to check their backpacks for their invitation to join our Wolf Canyon Birthday Book Club so we can celebrate them at our end-of-quarter assembly! 1st Grade Curriculum for Week 6, 8/26-8/30

Reading – Students have started to meet with their teachers for Guided Groups. Some of the texts that we are reading are about “How to follow rules and laws”.

Grammar – We are learning about adjectives and adverbs. An adjectives are descriptive words that help describe a noun and pronouns. Have your child identify an adjective in their nightly reading. I saw a beautiful, red rose in the garden.

Writing – Students took their Narrative Writing test and are starting Opinion Writing about the most important school rule. Opinion Writing has a hook, opinion statement, 2 reasons which are linked to examples and a conclusion.

Math – Students will soon begin reviewing Chapter 2: Subtraction Concepts. The Chapter 2 test will be administer this Friday, August, 30th.

Science: The unit about the similarities and differences of nature will continue this week.

I CAN statement: I can explain how young plants and animals are alike, but not exactly like their parents.

 

Movie Night & Campout announcement:

1st Grade Curriculum for Week 5, 8/19-8/23:

New Dismissal Procedure:

Effective Monday, students will be dismissed from our classroom at the end of the day, and not from the auditorium. We apologize for yet another change, but we feel it is the safest and easiest for students, parents and teachers. Please let anyone who may be picking up your child know of these changes effective immediately. Bus riders, YMCA/DASH and Kids On The Go attendees will be walked to their locations by Ms. Mazeau, another first grade teacher. Those who attend after school classes/activities (i.e. dodgeball, basketball, art, etc.) will also be picked up from our classroom by their coach/teacher. Please continue to let me know in advance of any changes in after school care. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we continue to adjust to the increase in student population this year.

What are we learning this week?

Reading– We are continuing an author’s study of Eric Carle. While reading his books, we are working on identifying story elements and sequencing. Try having your child retell a story – focus only on four to five important events. Use words like: In the beginning, First, Next, Then and At the end __________. Identify the main problem and solution in a text. Students will emulate his writing style when making their own books.

Grammar – Students are learning the difference between linking and action verbs. Action verbs are: run, jump, sing, play, and sleep. Helping verbs are: am, is, and are.

Writing– A writing test on narrative will be given in a span of 2-3 days this week.

Have your child sing this song to help remember the parts of a Narrative. It is to the tune of The Battle Hymn Republic:

Bold beginning, mighty middle, exciting ending I’ll write all three.

Write events with transitions and tell who was there with me.

Writing– We are working on the 3 parts of a narrative writing piece: beginning, middle, and end. Students will also revise and edit their writing once completed.

Prompt: Tell about what you do after school.

Math– A new chapter will begin. Chapter 2 involves subtraction concepts within 10. 1st Grade Curriculum for Week 3, Aug. 5th-Aug. 9th

Reading–Students are practicing how to differentiate between fiction and nonfiction genres, and respond to the texts. Students are learning to read to find the gist, read to discover the meaning of unknown words, and the author’s purpose. Each class has been taught the “I PICK” chant to help students find books that suit their preference and reading level.

Grammar – Students will identify and use the basic feature of sentences such as periods and capitals.

Writing– We are working on the 3 parts of a narrative writing piece: beginning, middle, and end.

Math– First graders are currently working on Chapter 1: Addition Concepts within 10. Chapter 1 test will be administered on Thursday, August 8th.

Social Studies:A new unit on Responsible Citizenship will begin this week. In this unit, students will learn about rules and laws in our home, school, and community.

Essential question:How can we be responsible citizens?
